The former Hohndorf hard coal grinding plant has left a dangerous environmental legacy in its more than 100-year history. Large-scale and deep tar oil contamination was present in the soil, groundwater and adjacent watercourses of the site, which was closed in 1992.

This is the view after the cover plate was removed: The Ida shaft was visible up to about 8 meters below the top edge of the ground. When the shaft was filled in 1967, the filling material reached up to the plate. But it is not just the filling material that has slipped: the joints are dilapidated, the shaft is deformed.
