The Sanctuary of Eleusis was one of the most important ancient cult centers of antiquity. In it, Demeter, goddess of nature, agriculture and rural life, was worshiped together with her daughter, Persephone.
The connection of Eleusis with the two goddesses is due to the myth of Persephone's abduction by Pluto and her search by her mother. This myth, told thousands of times by rhapsodists and dramatists, was one of the most beloved of the ancient world and a source of inspiration for many artists in different eras.
