Sami was one of the four
autonomous city-states (Tetrapolis) of Kefalonia and was mentioned in Homer's epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey.
The acropolis was a
powerful fortress with massive city walls that served to protect the population. The walls exhibit various building styles, including the impressive cyclopean masonry.

Hiking
After a four-month siege, Sami was conquered in 188 BC by the Romans under Marcus Fulvius Nobilior.
Visitors can see ruins from
various epochs, including Hellenistic citadels, Roman baths, and the Agioi Fanentes monastery, built within the ancient walls.
The site offers
spectacular panoramic views of the port of Sami, the bay of Antisamos, and the neighboring island of Ithaka.
