Information board about the Via Rheini and Mauren:
The name "Mauren" probably goes back to the remains of Roman walls and was first mentioned in 1320 with a chapel dedicated to Mary and Pelagius. It was a branch of the St. Brictius and Blasius Church in Altdorf and together with it belonged to the Cistercian monastery of Bebenhausen.
The chapel was mentioned as a pilgrimage church in the indulgence letter of May 5, 1363. The martyr Pelagius and the Virgin Mary as well as other saints were venerated.
By visiting the church and attending the service (pilgrimage) on certain days of the church year, the pilgrim's sins were forgiven in order to escape the torments of purgatory. The Mauren pilgrimage flourished at times. The "Madonna of Mauren" was at the center of the veneration. The wooden statue is now in the storeroom of the Württemberg State Museum in Stuttgart.

The Via Rheni (German: Rheinstrasse) was part of an important north-south connection from the Rhineland across the Swabian Alb to Upper Swabia and from there across the Alps to Italy. It was documented as Via Rheni in 1191 and its course through the Schönbuch is confirmed by terrain traces and path names. Contrary to what the Latin name would suggest, this is not one of the well-known Roman roads, although large sections were probably also used by the Romans and possibly even in pre-Roman times. In the area of the central section of this road, in the districts of Tübingen and Böblingen as well as the former district of Leonberg, this road is still known today and can be found on some maps under the names Rheinstrasse, Rheinsträßle or Heerstrasse. In many sections it is still used as a field or forest path or as a road. However, it lost its original meaning with the advent of road and path construction in the 18th century and is therefore hardly recognizable in today's landscape as this formerly important long-distance road.
