The mill was built in 1742 as a western ironing mill for the Wieringerwaard. After the construction of a steam pumping station in 1871, the mill became redundant. In 1872 the mill was sold to C. Posch, who converted it into a flour mill. However, the mill remained in place (this was a condition of the contract). In October 1916, axles and rods were purchased from a mill on the Bovenkerkerpolder in Nieuwer-Amstel (Amstelveen), which was demolished around 1915. The mill remained in operation until about 1920, after which a diesel engine took over the work completely. De Hoop was only used as a home for the mechanical mill and slowly fell into disrepair. In 1961, the interior of the mill was completely demolished. The mill was sold to the Wieringerwaard polder. He transferred the mill to the then municipality of Barsingerhorn in 1979.
