Until September 2019, the bridge at Stokrooie was a concrete girder bridge over the Albert Canal. The bridge is part of the N729 regional road. Previously, the canal could be crossed via an arch bridge that was built in 1937, but it was destroyed during the Second World War. After this, a temporary bridge was built, which was later replaced by a concrete girder bridge. In October 2017, work started on a new steel arch bridge over the Albert Canal. This had been parallel to the concrete girder bridge since March 2019. In September 2019, the old girder bridge was demolished and the new bridge was put into use. After this, the canal underpass was widened from 50 metres to 86 metres.

De Vlaamse Waterweg nv is raising the Stokrooie bridge. Raising the bridge and locally widening the Albert Canal is part of the upgrading of the Albert Canal. This larger project involves eliminating capacity-limiting bottlenecks on the Albert Canal.

The steel structure for the new bridge was prepared in a workshop and then assembled at an assembly site along the Albert Canal. This assembled bridge will be sailed in and completed next weekend. On Saturday evening and night, the bridge will be moved from the assembly site onto a pontoon. The pontoon will then sail towards the new location at around 7.30 am on Sunday morning. Once there, the pontoon is turned and the bridge is lifted over the temporary abutments.

The new bridge will be built upstream parallel to the existing bridge. This means that the interruption of the N729 can be limited to 4 weeks during the connection to the new bridge.

If everything goes according to plan, the new bridge will be opened to traffic in July 2019. The old bridge will be demolished in August.
