The Romanesque church was first mentioned in documents in 1143 and probably dates back to the 10th/11th century. From 1219 to 1809 it was the patron church of the Teutonic Order. As a Teutonic Order church it certainly got its name St. Mary's. Today it is primarily used for Protestant services and belongs to the Evangelical Church of Langeln.
The church tower (tower 42m high), which was rebuilt in 1997 after being demolished in 1987, houses a local history museum run by the municipality. The church is also the cultural center of the town and provides the necessary setting for concerts.
