Best Hikes to Springer Mountain Shelter

Tips

  • The shelter is located about 600 feet north of Springer Mountain summit. It features a wider area with a wooden two-story shelter, two bear boxes, two privies and multiple camping spaces.

  • This relatively large campground is practically at the start of the Appalachian Trail, with sites ranging from individual sites to sites for larger groups, two private campsites, bear-proof food storage, and a large shelter (there are generally few other shelters in bad weather). Access to fresh water, which should be filtered, is also available here, as are several fire pits.
They are currently trying to scale back usage to give nature a bit more space.
