Stengel lived in this house in Brauhausgasse/Am Schlossberg and published his first poems in local newspapers at the age of fourteen. After serving in the war and being a prisoner of war, he studied German and later journalism. In the early 1950s he moved to East Berlin and worked until 1959 as an editor for the satirical magazine Frischer Wind, which was later published as Eulenspiegel. As a freelance author, he wrote satirical and humorous features and poems.
