The mountain Koppenstein is already mentioned in the 12th century. There are indications that indicate an even older settlement (ditches and stone walls). The ruins visible today were built by the Counts of Sponheim after 1325. 1330 received the settlement at the foot of the castle city rights. At the latest in the Thirty Years' War, the castle and the place were abandoned and decayed.

Today, the pentagonal and 20 m high keep is best preserved. He is mountable and offers a wide view.

Of the remaining buildings of the castle and the settlement only sparse remains or foundations are present. The moat is up to 10 meters deep and in places up to 20 meters wide.

At Koppenstein Castle in early 1800, the spoils were split from the raid of Otzweiler and another robbery of Schinderhannes.

Very beautiful castle ruins in a picturesque landscape. Definitely worth a visit, whether by bike or on foot.

The last few meters are not passable, on one side there is stairs up to the ruin. On the other side, it is mainly over a small field of rubble made of stones to the ruin.
