Nybster Broch – Pictish history on a cliff edge
A dramatic Iron Age settlement on a steep cliff overlooking the North Sea, just south of John O’Groats. This broch – a circular stone dwelling tower – is part of a larger complex of dwellings and passages, possibly reused by the Picts. The short walk from the A99 takes you past rugged coastal scenery to the ruins, with the added bonus of the bizarre 19th-century Mervyn’s Tower, built in tribute to the excavations
