On the edge of the Buurserzand there is a historic fortification (a defense structure) that dates back to the period of the Eighty Years' War. During this war, in which the Netherlands resisted the domination of the Catholic Spaniards, this fortification was erected along the trade route to Münster, which at the time followed the Buurserbeek. This trade route was of great importance, because many goods from Germany were transported via this waterway system to the Hanseatic cities such as Zutphen. This gave the fortress a strategic significance.
