The construction of the first Pötrauer church is not exactly dated. It was built from granite stones in the Middle Ages. The tower of the current Pötrauer church shows a remnant of this architectural style. In 1634, during the Thirty Years' War, the church was badly damaged. The church, which was then restored until 1680, was demolished in 1866 due to dilapidation and rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style in 1867/1868.

When the British marched in on May 1, 1945, the church burned down due to flying sparks from burning thatched roof houses. It was rebuilt after 1949. More than 100 victims of the heavy bombing attack on April 26, 1945 on Büchen are buried in the cemetery in front of the church.
