Dominican Convent of the English Greetings, Altenstadt
From the history of our convent
Our community emerged from the medieval tradition of enclosure. With the permission of the bishop or superior, men and women who were particularly strong in their faith were walled up or locked in a cell. This form of worship was documented several times in the Lake Constance area. In Feldkirch-Altenstadt, such a way of life is architecturally and documented (since the middle of the 15th century). The documents speak of the convent sisters and sisters of the Order of Preachers. The "convent" with its chapel of St. Dominic consecrated in 1442 must have been very poor. So we do not know exactly when the women gathered here followed in the footsteps of St. Dominic.
Mother Constantia Bissinger (1600-1674) built the first convent in 1634-35. During their 37-year term of office, the sisters changed from the Dominican Third Order Rule to the statutes for the nuns of the Preachers Order. Solemn choral prayer and strict enclosure were introduced.
Their great successor in the priory, Anna Lossin (1627-1716), rebuilt the monastery for the growing number of nuns between 1679 and 1703. The monastery of Mary of the English Salutation, which she built, has been a place of unceasing prayer for generations of Dominicans for more than three centuries, right up to the present day.
