Rheintaler Binnenkanal power plants, Lienz

As part of the Rhine regulation in 1906, the three power plants Lienz, Blatten and Montlingen were built on the Rheintaler Binnenkanal. With a total annual production of around 6.2 million kWh, the three power plants cover the electricity needs of around 1,370 households.

The three power plants Lienz, Blatten and Montlingen are still housed in the renovated historic facilities from the time they were founded in 1906. They are located in the idyllic local recreation area on the Rheintaler Binnenkanal - directly on the route of the signposted cycle path in the St.Gallen Rhine Valley in the area of the municipalities of Lienz, Oberriet and Montlingen. As an environmentally friendly electricity producer, the SAK is committed to caring for nature, especially in the area around its power plants. Between autumn 2021 and 2025, the SAK will renovate the three inland canal power plants and equip them with new fish ascent and descent solutions. This allows the lake trout from Lake Constance to find their way to the spawning waters in the upper Rhine Valley. With this commitment, the SAK is proactively helping to ensure the conservation of this fish species.
