This characteristic species is an essential component of the Páramo flora. The Páramos are unique, humid-tropical highland steppes of the Andes, which play a crucial role as water reservoirs for the region.
It grows in extremely dense, firm cushions (often referred to as "Colchones" or mattresses) to store heat and protect itself from extreme UV radiation and strong winds.
Like a natural sponge, these plants absorb moisture from the fog and rain and slowly release it into the soil.
