History
The village was first mentioned as New England in the 1793 bailiwick map. A Johann Abot and his house were also marked here. He was originally an English officer and later changed his name to Alberts. There are two different accounts of this. In another interpretation, it was assumed that New England was named after the settlement of the narrow land on the edge of the former swamp and raised moor area.

Prisoner of war camp
During World War I, the Lengener Moor prisoner of war camp was located in New England. 500 prisoners were housed in two barracks each, and they probably did forced labor in the moor. Today, nothing remains of the former camp.
