A narrow-gauge railway ran along here, connecting the Allendorf ammunition works with the Kirtorf airfield. The exact designation in case of war was operational port (E port).
Well camouflaged in the forest in Allendorf was one of the largest munitions factories in Europe, in central Germany.
For the so-called "Blitzkriege", many small field airfields were set up throughout the German Reich for operations, including in Kirtorf.
