The Tortolita Mountain & Ridgeline loop delivers an exhilarating mountain biking experience through the heart of the Sonoran Desert, showcasing rugged terrain and an abundance of Saguaro cacti. This challenging 17.6 miles (28.3 km) route, with its 2614 feet (797 metres) of elevation gain, is rated moderate but demands advanced skills, taking around 3 hours and 5 minutes to complete. You'll navigate narrow ridgelines, chunky rock sections, and steep climbs, all while enjoying impressive views of the Catalina Mountains.

Planning your ride is straightforward, as the Tortolita Mountains offer a year-round riding season. While no specific permits are typically required for the trails, always ensure you have ample water, especially during warmer periods. Trailhead parking is generally available, but arriving early is a good idea to secure your spot, particularly if you're heading out on a busy weekend.

This loop is celebrated as one of southern Arizona's premier mountain biking destinations, known for its blend of technical challenge and stunning natural beauty. The diverse trail network provides everything from smooth singletrack to highly technical sections, appealing to riders looking to push their limits. It's a fantastic way to experience the distinct life forms and panoramic vistas of the Sonoran Desert.

The Wild Mustang and Ridgeline Trails loop offers a truly diverse mountain biking experience in the Tortolita Mountains near Tucson, Arizona. You'll navigate everything from jeep roads to narrow singletrack, with sections of slickrock and sand, all while winding through Pinion Pines and rock canyons. The upper reaches of the Ridgeline Trail provide magnificent, sweeping views of the Catalina Mountains and the entire Tucson area, making the challenging climbs well worth the effort.

This 17.7-mile (28.5 km) route, rated moderate, involves a significant 2470 feet (753 metres) of elevation gain and typically takes around 3 hours and 1 minute to complete. Be prepared for a very physical ride with steep ascents and technical descents featuring switchbacks and large rocks. Due to its demanding nature, this loop tends to be less crowded than other trails, even on weekends, offering a more solitary experience for experienced riders.

While the overall loop is rated moderate, sections like the Wild Mustang Trail are considered difficult, even Black Diamond, known for their gnarly and very physical climbing and descending. This loop is often ridden in conjunction with the Wild Burro Trail, further increasing the technical challenge. It's a prime example of the rugged and rewarding mountain biking terrain available in the Arizona desert.
