According to legend, the Church of St. Catherine was built by a giant. At the same time, another giant was building the little church on Langfenn near Meltina. Since the two only had one hammer, they agreed to take turns throwing the hammer over the Tschögglberg. When the Haflinger giant once forgot to do this, the giant of Meltina became so angry that he threw a huge boulder over the mountain, narrowly missing the little Church of St. Catherine...

It is documented that a church burned down here in 1202, and the new Romanesque building was consecrated in 1251. In the 15th century, the church was rebuilt in the Gothic style. The Romanesque entrance portal was moved from the south to the west side in 1891 to protect the interior vaults.
