The southern French municipality lies at an altitude of 410 metres in the Durance valley on the A51 motorway (which corresponds to European route 712), approximately halfway between Grenoble and Marseille.The municipal area is over 65 square kilometres and includes numerous districts, all of which lie downstream (south) of the village centre. Dabisse, which has its own school and community centre, is the most important offshoot; Pourcelles is the name of the most remote hamlet.A geological feature makes the place unmistakable. It is Les Pénitents ('The Penitents'), a bizarre rock formation that rises above the village and is visible from afar. It stretches for around one kilometre and the highest peak towers 114 metres above the valley. The appearance of the rocks is reminiscent of a group of religious brothers wearing hooded monks' robes.
