The monument was erected between 1892 and 1896 to honor Kaiser Wilhelm I. It is one of Germany's most important national monuments and symbolizes the national unity of that time. At 88 meters high, it is the second tallest monument in Germany after the Monument to the Battle of the Nations in Leipzig. The monument offers a spectacular panoramic view of the Porta Westfalica, the Weser Gorge, and the surrounding Weser and Wiehen Hills. Its elevated location on the Wittekindsberg hill provides a sweeping view of the North German Plain.
