The farmer's son Albert Leo Schlageter, born in Schönau in 1894, only gained fame and popularity after his execution in Düsseldorf in 1923. At the beginning of the 1920s, the World War II officer and later free corps fighter joined the Heinz organization, a right-wing secret society that did not shy away from murder. After French and Belgian troops marched into the Rhineland in 1923, which was supposed to enforce the reparation claims set out in the Versailles Treaty, Schlageter actively resisted the occupying powers. The transport of coal from the Ruhr to France should be prevented by all means. After a bomb attack on a railway bridge in Kalkum, Schlageter was arrested in April of the same year. After a literally short trial before a French military court, Schlageter's execution took place in May 1923 by firing squad of the occupying power.

The shrapnel in the tower, which came from the air raid, is clearly visible.
Some people must have scraped the splinters out of the stone. ?

Great view from above. Good excursion destination for the whole family.
