Great historical village on a mountain top. In addition to beautiful white houses, it offers a ruined castle, a beautiful garden and a wonderful all-round view of the surrounding countryside.

The fortified town of Marvão, 12 kilometers from Quinta do Pomarinho, is also known as the "Eagle's Nest." It boasts a spectacular location on a granite cliff, on one of the peaks of the Serra de São de Mamede mountain range. Marvão is completely walled and located in the Alto Alentejo region, on the Spanish border, which was formerly patrolled from the village.

The town of Marvão owes its name to Ibne Maruane, an Arab military leader who sought refuge here in the 11th century. He hid on Mount Ammaia and built a castle there, in the most remote and inaccessible spot he could find.

Years later, the castle was finally converted into a medieval fortress. Due to its location, it was a strategic defensive position between hills and slopes to the north, south, and west, accessible only on foot from the village side. For many years, Marvão was a municipality with a strong and significant involvement in many military conflicts in the region.
Today, Marvão is a rather sleepy town, but it's a lovely place to wander around.

Gorgeous village within the castle walls at the top of the mountain.
