The Vereda do Calhau trail begins near the Achadas da Cruz cable car and descends the imposing slope to the sea. It's a demanding trail due to the uneven and steep terrain. At the end of the trail lies Fajã da Quebrada Nova, a village of abandoned houses that make the place somewhat unusual and mysterious. On the way back, we find the intersection with Vereda da Ladeira, turning right. Once used by local farmers, this trail, though short, is also challenging, but worth it for the magnificent panoramic views of the Atlantic and Achadas da Cruz. Our route ended at the Pombais Viewpoint, where a local resident claims there's a spring with very good water. We then took the Levada do Moinho trail, which runs through a patch of verdant Laurissilva where water is a constant source.
