The dam is located around 700 meters above the Leibstadt train station, where the Rhine used to split and flow around an Au island. The five-gate weir closes off the entire southern main course of the Rhine, with the three southern openings on Swiss territory and the two northern openings on German territory. The northern branch was converted into the headwater canal of the power plant. The Auhof island in between was turned into a reservoir.
