On the square in front of the Geesthacht Museum, a bronze bust commemorates the Swedish chemist and inventor Alfred Nobel (* 1833, † 1896). From 1865, Nobel had the first industrial nitroglycerin factory built on the European continent in nearby Düneberg “Auf dem Krümmel” (today part of Geesthacht) and invented dynamite there two years later. This factory is therefore considered the starting point of his global economic empire. After the Second World War the factory was shut down. The bust is a replica of a work by Ulrich Bliese and was installed at its current location in 1993.
