At the site of the fountain, inaugurated in 1982, the "Mäckelmarkt" (bricklayers' market) was held from the 18th to the 20th century. Here, brickmakers and master brickmakers negotiated their contracts for the coming year during the winter. In 1910, there were approximately 14,000 brickmakers in Lippe, representing about 10 percent of the population.

Here, you can also start the Tichler Route (Tichler = brickmaker), a 40km trail that leads through Lage, Leopoldshöhe, and Lemgo, returning to Lage. Information panels along the route provide insights into the historical significance of this craft for the Lippe region and highlight the places where the brickmaking tradition is still alive today.
