According to legend, the little church was built in thanks for the miraculous rescue of a hunter who had become hopelessly lost in the salt forest. In addition, the cozy church is also popularly known as the Church of the Snows. Since 1723, a copy of the highly revered image of the "Salus Populi Romani" from the Roman church of Santa Maria Maggiore has hung here, commemorating the legendary miracle of the Snows.

Despite all the beauty of the place, Unterebersbach never had a great pilgrimage tradition; the importance of the church, first mentioned in 1453 and enlarged in 1588 by Julius Echter, was rather limited to the immediate surroundings. Only August 5th has remained an important festival day in the Unterebersbach calendar over the centuries: then the locals celebrate the Maria Schnee festival and countless former pilgrims flock to the small Rhön community.
