Its name is Vignoni Alto, less known than the famous Bagno Vignoni but also of overwhelming beauty. The origins of Vignoni date back to the 11th century, as a possession of the Abbey of S.Antimo. In the first half of the following century it belonged to the Tignosi of Rocca d'Orcia, but the power of Siena was already making its claims, so much so that in 1207 Vignoni was among the lands obliged to pay an extraordinary tax. However, during the 13th-16th centuries, Vignoni, and the nearby Bagno Vignoni, continued to escape Sienese control, passing from the Tignosi family to that of the Salimbeni. Only at the end of 1300 did Siena manage to take possession of the castle and Bagno Vignoni. In the current fortified village you can still see a tower, now severed, equipped with a strong and wide slope and surmounted by a redundum and some small windows. This was the keep, the heart of the fortress. Even one of the ancient access doors to the walled enclosure is still perfectly intact, next to the church of San Biagio. Outside the door the view of the Val d'Orcia is breathtaking. On the left stands the bell tower of the church and on the right the best preserved section of the walls, with the corner tower, built with the same characteristics as the keep.
