A surprising contrast on the EuroVelo 1: in the middle of the vast, barren blanket bog of North Mayo, you suddenly ride through a sheltered green ribbon of coniferous forest. This rare patch of woodland offers a welcome change from the wind and the open plains. It is one of the few places in this region where trees bravely hold their ground against the Atlantic elements, creating a unique, almost mystical atmosphere as you climb or descend the slopes of the Benwee mountains.
