The Akrotiri peninsula lies off the north coast of West Crete. The peninsula, which protrudes into the Cretan Sea in a dripping form northeast, is connected to Crete in the southwest by a wide land bridge. Chania, the second largest city in Crete, and Souda, the port city, are located in the west. Completed by the peninsula Souda Bay is the largest natural harbor on the island.

The southwestern part of the peninsula is formed by a plateau 100 to 200 meters above sea level. This plateau runs to the west of the peninsula in the bay of Kalathas (Όρμος Καλάθας). The northeastern part of the Akrotiri, however, is quite mountainous, the highest point of the peninsula is in the east of the mountain Skloka with 528 meters in height.
