Rānana Marae is home to Ngāti Ruaka, Ngāti Hine and Ngāti Rangi and many other hapū (tribes and sub-groups) of the area. This home is their place to practice and learn their customs, celebrate life events, mourn the loss of whānau (family members) and meet to discuss community and tribal issues. You are respectfully requested not to enter or photograph the marae area unless permission has been granted by the Rānana Marae Trustees.

Not far away is Moutoa Island in the Whanganui River, which is around 460 m long. The island is surrounded by rapids and has been the site of wars among the Māori. The most significant took place on 14 May 1864 during the Second Taranaki War between the followers of Pai Mārire (also called Hauhau) from the upper Whanganui River and the Ngati-Hau tribe from the lower reaches of the river. The battle was about the use of land by the Pākehā (white settlers) in and around the city of Whanganui. Some wanted to throw the settlers into the sea, others wanted to cooperate with them. It is said that it was a battle of older brothers against younger brothers and younger brothers against older brothers. There were many deaths. Today, the local tribes honour all the warriors who fell at that time and this important historical event is still commemorated. Its lessons resonate throughout the Whanganui River.
