Te Kawana Mill was established in 1854 as part of Whanganui's earliest flour production industry. For 59 years, wheat was milled using hydroelectric power on the banks of the Whanganui River.
The mill was rebuilt in 1979 and as part of this project the cottage was moved to where it stands today, next to the mill.
The entire complex is freely accessible.
