The Whanganui River Road leads over Gentle Annie Hill to State Highway 4, cutting off a 22km long meandering loop of the river that leads northwest. At Upokongaro you reach the river again. 180 metres of elevation gain are to be overcome. At the highest point you are rewarded with a magnificent view of the Whanganui Valley.
