The only church in the world dedicated to Saints Peter and Alexander, the foundation of the monastery dates back to Duke Liudolf of Swabia in the 10th century. In 982 Aschaffenburg - and with it the monastery - came to Mainz and the church and monastery college developed into a formative factor for the preferred residence of the Mainz archbishops. In 1821 the monastery came to the diocese of Würzburg. For the 1000th anniversary celebrations in 1958, Pope Pius XII elevated the church to a basilica, the only papal basilica in the diocese of Würzburg. The monastery basilica is richly furnished with outstanding works of art history, including the Ottonian crucifix (10th century), Grünewald's "Lamentation of Christ", the Maria Schnee altar and the unique Romanesque cloister.
