On the site where the old Juan de Gordejuela watermill stood, the Hamilton & Co. company decided to make an innovative bet for the time: to install a water elevator with a steam engine in 1903.
The water was collected from nearby springs and pumped to more than 200 meters above sea level for distribution to the banana farms.
The system did not last many years in operation. But even today, although abandoned, it is undoubtedly a landmark that tells us about the abundance of water in this area and its value to people.
