In 1844, Duke Adolf of Nassau married Elisabeth Romanow, a niece of the Tsar. When the Russian princess and her entourage moved into Biebrich Castle, the problem of a lack of religious care for the sovereign and her Russian servants, as well as for the ever-increasing numbers of Russian guests streaming into the city, became more pressing. One year after the wedding, the princess died in her child's bed.

One year after the inauguration of the Russian Church, Grand Duchess Jelena, the mother of the late Duchess Elisabeth, initiated the creation of the Russian cemetery, which was inaugurated on August 31, 1856.

The Wiesbaden cemetery remained the only Russian Orthodox cemetery in Germany for a long time and therefore had a correspondingly large catchment area that extended into German- and French-speaking countries.
