In 2002, the city of Marche-en-Famenne chose to develop the old cemetery of Aye, which was dilapidated and closed to the public for years, as a kind of open park, with lots of greenery, a bench here and there, and without walls . 0pen for all religions and life views, especially: Catholic, Muslim, liberal, .... from the point of view that "Everyone is ultimately equal at death". Religious symbols should be applied somewhat discreetly here. Overly ostentatious crosses, for example, are not allowed.
The "new" cemetery, a little further away, was already completely full at that time. There was therefore a need for additional space. Restoring the old cemetery to its former glory therefore seemed the best option.
A 19th century burial chapel has been preserved on the street side.
