Ihlow Monastery

The year 1228 is considered the founding date of Ihlow Monastery. In a forest eight kilometers south of the settlement of Aurechove, members of the Cistercian Order built their "Monasterium Sanctae Mariae in Scola Deï." The dimensions of the church in its "School of God" are enormous: almost 68 meters long and approximately 35 meters wide in the transept. The sacred building, built in the Brick Gothic style, was the largest church between Bremen and Groningen at the time.

In 1529, Ihlow Monastery was dissolved during the Reformation, and the church was destroyed. The remaining buildings – since then used as a stately hunting estate – were also finally demolished in the 18th century. A hunting lodge for the East Frisian princes was built on the monastery site.
