The Agrarian Defense was born in 1925 as opposition to local power. Republicanism and Catalanism converged in it until the start of the Franco dictatorship. After the confiscation, in 1939, the building was abandoned and in 1952 the parish founded Casal Selvatà. In 1978 the former members were able to recover the organization and shared space with the members of Casal.

    The new Agrarian Defense

In 1977, with the conquest of democratic freedoms, the former partners of the Agrarian Defense wanted to recover the building. After some discussions, an agreement was reached that both entities could use the building. In 1978, a new Agrarian Defense was set up that would promote theater and the sardana from the values of cultural Catalanism, but also the defense of the peasantry and republican values from political Catalanism.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the architectural style of La Defensa Agrària and what are its key features?

La Defensa Agrària is a significant example of the Noucentista style, constructed between 1926 and 1927. Its design is characterized by solidity and simplicity, avoiding excessive ornamentation. The building features a distinctive trapezoidal plan and is divided into two main areas: a theater zone and other service dependencies. The theater hall, measuring approximately 30 to 40 meters in length and 15.50 meters in width, has preserved its original Noucentista architecture and decoration across three levels, including a vestibule, an orchestra pit, and a stage framed by a prominent molding.

How long should I plan for a visit to La Defensa Agrària?

While the building itself can be explored in a relatively short time, perhaps 30 minutes to an hour to appreciate its architecture and historical significance, many visitors choose to spend more time. This allows for enjoying the on-site bar and terrace, or combining the visit with exploring the charming town of La Selva del Camp and its surrounding area. If attending an event or performance, your visit duration will naturally be longer.

Is La Defensa Agrària accessible for visitors with mobility challenges or wheelchairs?

The research indicates that La Defensa Agrària is a historic building with a multi-level theater interior. While the ground floor and bar area might offer some accessibility, the detailed description of the theater with its three levels, orchestra pit, and basement suggests that full accessibility for wheelchairs or those with significant mobility challenges might be limited, especially for accessing all parts of the theater. It is advisable to contact the venue directly for specific accessibility information before your visit.
