The synagogue was built from 1671 to 1675 based on a design by the Christian building contractor Elias Bouman. The client was the Amsterdam community of Sephardic Jews. The synagogue was restored from 1953 to 1957.
The oldest Jewish library still in operation, the "Ets Haim" library, is located in the synagogue complex.

The Portuguese Synagogue was built in 1675 in the heart of Amsterdam and was the largest synagogue in the world at the time. The building is still used for worship today. However, the synagogue is freely open to the public and regularly hosts classical music concerts.
Admission for a visit is 22 euros (also applies to the Jewish Museum.)
