The municipality's landmark and coat of arms is also located in the marina of Rethymno. Two dolphins circle the letters ΡΙΘΥ ('RITHY'). The story behind it goes back to ancient times. It is said that Rhithymna is pre-Hellenic, which is what the city name Rethymno was later based on. Coins minted in the city in the 4th and 3rd centuries BC depicted sea symbols such as the two dolphins or a trident on the value side. The city's coat of arms is therefore based on an image of an ancient coin.
