The gorge is a wild, romantic ravine landscape. The oxygen-rich, crystal-clear and green-brown shimmering torrent flows between the rugged limestone cliffs, a valuable habitat not only for trout but also for the insects that live in the water. The largest part of the area is made up of Triassic limestone. This was formed around 250-210 million years ago from the remains of calcareous organisms. The deep gorges are the result of water erosion that has been taking place for millions of years. Sand and stones were carried downstream and in some cases ground huge rock basins into the stream bed.
