At the municipality of Baierbrunn, about 15 km south of Munich, the water of the Isar flows into the left-sided Isarwerkkanal. Five power plants along the canal use hydropower before the canal flows back into the river after about 12 km. In order to maintain a minimum runoff in the river Isar, 12 m³ / s of water are released into the river at the branch to the Isarwerk canal via a weir. The Baierbrunn power plant uses this residual water output and the drop height at the weir to generate electrical energy.
