"The Piazza Sella, with its benches and huge flower beds surrounded by centenarian trees, plays a central role both socially and as a meeting place and in relation to the viability of Cagliari. The first urban development of the square extended from 1841 to 1885, with gradual extensions between 1909 and 1914 that defined the square floor plan.

In the middle of the square is the monument of Quintino Sella, one of the most famous landmarks of the city. The municipality of Iglesias gave Quintino Sella honorary citizenship in 1871.
