The city fortifications were started around 1335. The wall is complete, and three of the 16 cavalry towers that were once built on it have survived. The four defensive towers are:
in the northwest, Vexierturm, a round tower with a Welsch cap from 1601
on the west side near the mill, Thürnersturm, on a square floor plan
on the south side, Jakobturm, square floor plan
on the south side near the town parish church, Pulverturm, square floor plan, raised in 1595
