The Fontana Maggiore, located in the center of Piazza IV Novembre, is the symbolic monument of the city of Perugia.
Built by Umberto the Master, between 1278 and 1280, to celebrate the arrival of water in the acropolis of the city, thanks to the new aqueduct.

The Fontana Maggiore, a well decorated with reliefs in the Umbrian town of Perugia, is probably the most famous of all the medieval fountains in Italy.
It was built in 1277-1278 and sculpted by the then most important sculptors of Italy, Father Niccolรฒ Pisano and son Giovanni Pisano. The well was the end point of a complex of aqueducts, which led the water from the three kilometers distant Monte Paccino by lead pipes on the city hill. It had already been decided in 1254, but the construction, which was technically delicate because of the well, had taken two decades.
The fountain has a three-storey structure, the two lower parts are made of marble. The most exhausting pool has the layout of a 25-corner. The second, middle shell is supported by 36 pillars at the edge and a middle pillar. It is a 24-corner, with every other corner drawn inwards. On the top, bronze bowl are three young graces, which carry together a water-giving amphora.
