  • For the natives of the Canary Islands, the Dragos were sacred. They called the resin, which turns red when it comes into contact with air, dragon's blood. They used it for rituals, for incense, as a medicine and as an ingredient for embalming their dead. The Spanish conquerors quickly started trading in the precious dragon's blood, which was considered a panacea and an elixir of eternal youth. The fine ladies of Venice dyed their hair red with it. Their resin was also used as ink, for maintaining weapons and as varnish. They made shields for soldiers from the bark. The dragon tree populations declined alarmingly. The Dragos were literally bleeding out. Agriculture, livestock farming and construction activities also caused the dragon tree populations to dwindle.
