The Schoten-Dessel Canal was dug between 1844 and 1846. This provided the Northern Kempen region with calcareous water. It also became accessible by inland waterway. Along the bank, the towpath, where we now enjoy recreational walks, was designed for barge towing. "Barge towing" is a term used in inland navigation. This heavy work was performed by humans or animals. The perfect combination was the horse and donkey. To make the hard work more bearable, trees were planted to provide shade above the towpath.
